Batangas Fish Kill: Woe to Fish Pens!

Climate change didn't kill the Bangus and Tilapia in Batangas this weekend. The fishpens did.
This is according to my old UPIS classmate and U.P. Professor Dr. Benjamin Vallejo, with a PhD in Marine Biology, in his Facebook post in reaction to the
Inquirer.net's report. In his status post, Dr. Vallejo said, "A drop of temperature does not cause a lowering of oxygen levels since dissolved oxygen doesn't escape as rapidly into the air if the water is cool. Also the rainy season is not due to climate change!"

Queried on his opinion on the reason for the fish kill, Dr. Vallejo gave this explanation:

They (the Bangus and Tilapia ) feed the fish in high densities ad libitum. The huge amount of fecal waste and uneaten feed end up on the lake floor. Since tropical lakes are stratified by density differences (in Greek "meromixis"), the waste on the bottom are degraded by bacteria. This is an oxygen consuming process. Thus bottom water has little oxygen while surface water (where the fish cages are) has oxygen mainly due to gas exchange with the atmosphere and photosythesis. However deep tropical lakes like Taal are what we call as "polymictic" which means the bottom layers get mixed up at least once or even twice or more times a year. In monsoonal climates the SW monsoon is strong enough to cause this turnover. Taal is a big lake and there is enough fetch to allow this natural process to happen. Taal is an abused lake and so nature can take "revenge" for all these abuses.
When the lake overturns, the poorly oxygenated water ends up on the surface causing the fish kill which poor aquaculture management guaranteed this would happen. The overturning is natural. If there was no high fish density and fish waste at the bottom, there should have been no fish kill.

When asked how this can be remedied, Dr. Vallejo replied: "Take out all those fish pens and cages and let the lake recover!"

What can you say, BFAR?

Windows Phone Mango on IE9: Take it for a Spin!

The Windows Mango Phone is way too cool with the IE9 as its main feature.

Though it still doesn't have a Flash Player (they've got Silverlight, that's why) and Thethering, it's worth a second look. It highlights smart communication, apps and the web. Watch the video here for a spin:

Multiply Suppliers and Merchants: Beware!

I'm sharing a post sent to me by a Multiply merchant who was apparently ripped off or scammed.

Here's her (a.k.a. iloveyougoodbuy) post:

THIEF MAGNANAKAW KAWATAN

Hi people!

I just want to do my share of help for you my dear sellers.

Please please if ever you have a transaction and you recognize that it is with this man, say "No, sorry, something came up" or whatever reason you can just to get away and go home with your stuff.

If ever you know of his real name (the one written in the ID is fake), or of his whereabouts, please contact the site administratror. Also, please help spread this photo around. If you know the web address where scammers are posted here in multiply, let me know as well.

Thank you.

Sorry because of this I won't be doing any more meet-ups. I know that my items are genuine and authentic. If the pictures here and my guestbook comments are not enough to convince you then sorry, it's not my problem anymore. My safety and well-being is more important than making a sale. I surely hope you'll understand and I thank you for your continued patronage.

**MAY25, 2011. Even if it hurts to tell the story again, I will due to the demand**

This guy called me up (Mobile Number 09057215694), he saw my ad in sulit.com.ph for TAG Heuer Men's WAH1110.BA0858 Formula 1 Black Dial Watch. I told him it's available but the one that was on the way was paid for by my buyer already, Ms. Helen (please see my Tag Heuer Album). He said that he works in a hotel (Heritage) and that one of the regular guests who is his client, would like to see the actual product first before buying it. I told him that it's gonna arrive from the States on Sunday, May22 and I'll be glad to show it. Sunday, he called me up for a meet up which I agreed. After calling me, he feigned a wrong phone call, apologizing that he was calling his manager that he's gonna be late for work because we were meeting up. When we met, he also said he was waiting for his wife for the car, but she was running late, so we took a taxi to Heritage. He feigned another phone call, asking for his coworker to punch his card in the bundi clock as he was running late. During the ride, I offered to arrange that we were business partners and he could talk to his guest and profitize from my item as much as he want. I just need the item within my sight. He said we need to go to the guest's room to show the watch to his buyer, I declined as I am a lady and do not do such things. He said that the floor manager was on-duty and he's not supposed to be selling stuff to the guests and he might get caught if we were to do that in the lobby. I still said no. He left it at that for the moment. Then we arrived at Heritage Hotel, he asked permission to get off at the side entrance as he was going to "report for work" first. I was to enter through the hotel lobby and to wait for him there. He showed up from the inside, and he asked me to go upstairs with him, I hesitated, but I could see that he was uncomfortable and thought that I wouldn't want to get him caught having a sideline business. So I agreed, we went to the 5th floor then I waited for him to lead me somewhere. He paused and told me a roomboy was inside. He could go in because he was staff but I couldn't, we had to wait til he was gone. So we waited, and while waiting, he made small talk to the staff like he worked there and also tried to convince me to show it to the guest buyer while I wait outside. I wouldn't budge. Then we heard voices from staff and the supervisor, he was alarmed, he said he might get caught slacking off so he led me to the elevator and we went to the 2nd floor. There, he talked me into giving the item to him, just for a couple of minutes. I declined again. Then after walking around the 2nd floor, we went back up to the 5th floor, he made small talk with another guest in the elevator and offered his services should she need assistance with food & beverage. On the 5th floor, he continued asking me to give him a few minutes to show it to the guest, now saying that there was a Japayuki inside the room. He said he was going to leave his ID with me, but I shouldn't show it to any staff because he will get in trouble with work if I did. I told him, that his ID didn't have any value to me and that the watch was expensive. Looking back now, it's amazing how I was still logically arguing him but gave in the end. Also, I don't know why I found it hard to look him in the eye. I only kept staring at his stained, gapped teeth but never directly into his eyes for a long time. So, going back to the story, I asked him where his guest's room was and he pointed to a direction. I asked him to be specific about the room number, he replid "253". I pointed at the placard on the hotel wall, "That way just goes up to Room 250 only." He said the hallway turns (You see why I hesitate to post this, because with my day job, I see a lot of hotels and am familiar with them, I see a lot of people and can readily read their body language, but still, I let myself believe that this person is telling me the truth. I saw plenty of signs, like how he was breathing and acting, and how there were too many reasons, but I pushed them away and made excuses for the person just because I was challenged to make the sale). So to make the long story short, I accepted his ID, and he ran away with my Tag Heuer watch using the Housekeeping elevator. I called him up, answer, he texted me "WAIT LANG PO". When I told him I'm going to have his ID checked, that's when he shut off his phone. And so on, you probably know what's next. I also found out that the side entrance he went in to was not the Employee Entrance (which was actually on the other side of the building). It was the PAGCOR entrance, that's why he was wearing a barong because you can't get in if you're not properly dressed. *Magaling, magaling!*

I do not need to hope that you will learn from my mistake as it was admittedly a very very stupid one, one that you can say you won't ever make, but I just hope that you will take note of this guy's face and help me spread this photo around. I already reported it to Pasay Police Headquarters, and I need to call back SPO1 Cris Gabutin for the Report Record number so I can post it here.

Thanks for reading and I hope this will help.

There, that is my detailed story. If after all these, you still believe this guy is "innocent until proven guilty", you can all go to hell, maybe you belong to the same syndicate.

I thank you. Bow.

Former World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol defeated Javier Gallo of Mexico in the preliminary bout of the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosely 12-round title fight on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

Mayol, who is being promoted by Pacquiao's MP Promotions, won by majority decision against his Tijuana-born opponent.

Judges Jerry Roth and Lisa Giampa saw the fight in Mayol's favor, both giving the Filipino a 98-92 edge while C.J. Ross scored it 95-95.

Mayol's victory hiked his ring record to 28 wins, with 21 coming by way of knockout, against five losses (two by KO) and two draws.

The 29-year-old from Mandaue City, Cebu, won his second straight match after losing his WBC light flyweight championship belt to Omar Nino Romero of Mexico by decision last year.

Gallo, who is coming off a split decision win over countryman Jose Luis Araiza, suffered only his fourth loss in his 22nd match. He has 17 wins (9 KOs) and one draw.

Mayol weighed in at 112 lbs for his eight-round bout against Gallo, who tipped the scales at 114 lbs. — JVP/LBG, GMA News
